What to Look for in a Kids’ Activity Book: A Checklist for Parents

The covers of North Carolina Explorer and Texas Explorer side by side.

There are thousands of activity books for kids. Use this quick checklist to pick one that is worth your child’s time.

  • Right age and grade. Look for a clear age range, such as ages 8 to 12 or grades 3 to 5.
  • Readable text. Short sentences and new words explained where they appear.
  • Facts you can trust. The book should say where its facts come from, or check them against official sources.
  • A mix of activities. Crosswords, word searches, mazes, codes, quizzes and coloring keep different kids interested.
  • An answer key. Kids can check their own work without asking you.
  • Real photos with credits. Credits show the pictures were used with permission.
  • Good paper and print. Full-color pages and a size that leaves room to write.
  • Copy permission. If you are a teacher, check that you may copy pages for your class.

Our State Explorer books are written for grades 3 to 5, include an answer key, credit their photos and check their facts against official sources. You can see what is inside on each book’s page in Our Books.
